Two years ago, right after Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, X (formerly known as Twitter) and other social media platforms ran AMOK with different takes, opinions, and predictions on who they thought was going to emerge at the polls. These were ideas many of the professors swore by and were willing to even place money on just to prove how serious and convinced they were. Seeing all the takes sprung up a simple idea within us: “What if people could do more than just argue about these outcomes they believed in so much? What if they could also profit?”
That simple question became the seed for Gowagr, Africa’s culturally native prediction market.
And it didn’t start fancy, just a small experiment among friends, testing if everyday opinions could carry real value. But those early days taught us something powerful: people care deeply about what they know, and when given the chance, they’ll stand behind their convictions.
Fast-forward to today, about two years later, that idea has grown beyond what we imagined. We have grown from just a handful of users of those early days to almost 200,000 incredible users across the continent and beyond. In the same time, we have handled millions of dollars in market trades; creating one of the most exciting ecosystems in prediction markets while at it.
Yet for us, that growth is more than numbers — it’s a reflection of belief. Belief in insight, in community, and in what’s possible when people back their ideas. With growth comes evolution. A movement this big deserves an identity that reflects its scale, ambition, and future.
